Why We Love This Coffee
The producers of Hamasho live high up in the beautiful Bombe mountains. They have an out-grower relationship with our Ethiopian partner, Daye Bensa, who works with various communities of out-growers whom they receive cherries from, and also partners with multiple washing stations in the Bensa Sidama area, including some of which they own.
Hamasho or “Serpent”, translated to English, works with over 600 farmers who contribute with their cherries, mostly with 74158 Variety. Hamasho Station is managed by Asefa Dukamo Korma and is located in the Hamasho Kebele or Village and is part of the Bensa area, in Sidama, Ethiopia.
Due to the staggering elevations of more than 2,300 meters, the beans are very dense with heavy concentrations of the smaller screen sizes (the majority of the coffee screen sizes are at 13-14). After harvest, the cherries are placed to dry immediately after they arrive at the site on African beds for 16 to 21 days. During peak sun, the beds are covered to prevent over-drying.
This exceptional coffee is no surprise coming from Daye Bensa, who is known for such high quality coffees. In 2020, they won 7th place in the COE with their Assefa Dukamo Natural, grown on their farm Gatta, and in 2021, they received 8th place in the COE with one of their washed Hamasho lots! We’ve been working with Daye Bensa for many years now and we are extremely excited to keep developing this relationship.
