Coffees from the 1st annual Antioquia Mágico Competition have arrived! We have had the great privilege of buying several of the top lots from the annual Huila Mágico competitions the past two years (including the winner both years), and we are thrilled that a similar competition is now running in Antioquia. Antioquia is located in the North-West of Colombia. This region is a wonderful place for coffee and is also well-known for it – with 94 out 125 municipalities growing coffee. One of the objectives of this competition was to showcase the strength and bravery of our producers from this area, which is usually less known than the others. This 5th place lot is fantastic and tastes like a top quality washed Ethiopian coffee: super floral! This isn't surprising since it is a Chiroso variety. Chiroso is a variety cultivated at small scale in Colombia, famous for its cup quality. It is an Ethiopian landrace variety that “escaped” Ethiopia, much like the Gesha variety. We taste the same kinds of intoxicating florals that you find in Geshas and many of the un-named (but now numbered) heirloom varieties found in Ethiopia. Some of our cupping notes include orange blossom, vanilla, and sweet Meyer lemon. Even though we also bought the winner, this is our favorite coffee from this competition.

Tasting notes from the competition judges include "Black Tea, Chocolate, Dark grape, Delicate, Floral, Overall Sweet, Pomegranate, Tobacco, Wild berries, Blueberry jam."

From our importer:

"Finca Buena Vista is located in Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia and is run by Doña Carmen Montoya. However, this particular lot Doña Carmen gave to her daughter, Ana Maria. The farm sits at an elevation of approximately 2,000 m.a.s.l and this coffee is 100% Caturra Chiroso.

Doña Carmen purchased the farm in 2004 and focused on coffee because of the incentive of contests. After ten years of work, she earned 1st place in the 2014 Cup of Excellence. She gave this lot to her daughter to help motivate her and show her that there is a future in coffee when proper care and attention is given to the coffee. Officially, Doña Carmen runs the farm, but her daughter helps out when not studying.

The family lives and works at the farm, but during the harvest season she hires 8 women to help with picking. Doña Carmen finds joy in watching the trees grow and flower, but the biggest motivation is to sustain herself and collaborate with other women to support their families as well. In addition to coffee, she grows avocado, plantains, yuca, corn, and a garden.

Finca Buena Vista - Ana Maria, achieved 5th place in our Antioquia Magico contest this year. In fact, she placed higher than her Mother’s lot, which achieved 7th place!

It is our first time working with Doña Carmen and Ana Maria and we look forward to future harvests!"
