Coffees from the 1st annual Antioquia Mágico Competition have arrived! We have had the great privilege of buying several of the top lots from the annual Huila Mágico competitions the past two years (including the winner both years), and we are thrilled that a similar competition is now running in Antioquia. Antioquia is located in the North-West of Colombia. This region is a wonderful place for coffee and is also well-known for it – with 94 out 125 municipalities growing coffee. One of the objectives of this competition was to showcase the strength and bravery of our producers from this area, which is usually less known than the others. This winning lot is simply delightful: super sweet, very juicy, clean and balanced. This is as good as it gets with the Caturra variety. Cherry jam and grape juice are the two notes that really spring to mind when tasting it. 

Tasting notes from the competition judges include "Black Tea, Caramel, Floral, Liquorice, Milk Chocolate, Orange, Orange peel, Raspberry, Red Apple, tropical fruit, Dark grape, nutty, Milk chocolate, orange sweet, super sparkling acidity, good afterflavour. Nice round body"

"Finca La Falda is located in Giraldo, Antioquia, Colombia and is run by Rubiel Alberto Higuita and his family. The farm sits at an elevation of approximately 1,950 m.a.s.l. and this particular lot is 100% Caturra.  


While Rubiel and his wife generally oversee the entire harvest, Finca La Falda is a family run operation and his children also help out with various aspects such as the fermentation, washing and drying of the coffee. During the harvest, although the entire family is involved, they also hire 4-5 additional workers mainly to help out with cherry selection. When they are not in harvest, Rubiel and his sons will handle the farm maintenance themselves and outside of coffee, Rubiel and his family also grow beans and corn (products that are quite common on coffee farms in Colombia). 


This particular coffee is special because part of the lots that were produced were inoculated with outside yeasts during the fermentation process. Rubiel had indicated pre-harvest that he would be interested in experimenting and the results speak for themselves!  


Finca La Falda achieved 1st place in out Antioquia Magico contest this year, but this is not the first year they have produced specialty coffee. Rubiel and family have placed well in various other contests and aside from those, we have been buying their coffee for 4 years. Every harvest, it’s a pleasure to be able to work with their coffee and showcase the quality of the farm and the region! "

Roasting and Shipping Schedule:

Coffee is roasted on Wednesdays. If you order anytime up until 3pm Tuesday, we will roast and ship the next day. Orders received after 3pm Tuesday may not get roasted until the following week.
