Kenya. The quality of coffee coming from this origin is simply amazing. Cupping the pre-ship samples was actually extremely difficult because all of the coffees were so good. However, this one stood above the rest. There are some of the beautiful blackberry/blackcurrant notes that are so characteristic of top quality Kenyans, as well as that characteristic slight savoriness, with huge sweetness to finish it off. As you'd expect from a Kenyan, the acidity is bright and electric. Grapefruit really jumps out of the cup at you when this coffee cools.

We are particularly proud to offer this coffee to you because of the work that our importer, Trabocca, is doing with Ndaroini. They are buying ALL of the coffee that the Ndaroini group produces, and guaranteeing a much higher payment directly to the farmers, rather than the typical lower payment that first goes to the cooperative, where a deduction is made. They are also investing heavily in improving the infrastructure to increase both quality and yields.

More details from our importer:

"Ndaroini is a place of rest in the Swahili language. The Ndaroini group chose this name because they traveled long distances to deliver their cherries. After days of picking on their farms, they had to walk hours with their bags of cherries to the Gichathaini washing station. They couldn’t stay for the night and had to walk back to their place of rest, Ndaroini.

The Ndaroini farmers became fed up with the long walks. As the group grew, they dreamed of their washing station just a stone throw from their homes. The Gichathaini feared to lose the Ndaroini cherries and did everything to prevent the plans from succeeding. But the Ndaroini people finally got their washing station after years of persistent campaigning.

What happened during the 2018/2019 Kenyan coffee harvest?

In 2019, the 1400-strong Ndaroini farmer group cut its ties with the Gikanda Cooperative Society Ltd. and sold the coffee direct for a record price. Each Ndaroini member received Ksh 100 per kilogram coffee cherries in their pocket; instead of the average Ksh 60 before deductions. The Ndaroini growers called this the Kenyan coffee revolution.

For the season 2019/2020, we paid the same Ksh 100 per kilogram coffee cherries in April. Still a record price in the Kenyan market. However, the payment came two months later due to the effects of the Covid-19 crisis.

For the 2019/2020 Kenyan coffee harvest, we made several processing improvements. We imported new drying nets and shade nets; with larger wholes for better airflow and shade nets for a slower drying-process. The shade nets allow the Ndaroini to monitor and control the moisture levels of the parchment.

Moisture levels in Kenya, and Ethiopia, are an issue. Most of the time, these levels are way too low, down to 8%. While checking the parchment on the drying beds during harvest, we also noticed that the moisture-meter was 2 to 3% out of calibration. That is why we delivered a brand new moisture-meter that enables the Ndaroini to monitor the levels accurately on a daily basis.

We installed a new Pinhalense Eco pulper at the Ndaroini washing station. It can process a massive 2500kg/hour, which will cover their entire harvest this year. Unfortunately, we just missed the main harvest, from October to January, but the pulper will serve the Ndaroini during this fly-crop; from April to July and onwards.

The harvest season of 2019/2020 has been remarkable. The group;

  • grew with 200 members, from 1200 to 1400,
  • were able to keep Coffee Berry Disease largely at bay,
  • and went from 600.000 to 950.000 kilograms of coffee cherries."
